Manual drivers pride themselves on their driving skills a lot. It is fair as a driving manual does require a lot more skills than say an automatic. But, still what if we tell you, that you are doing something wrong? Yes, there are some things you may be doing wrong unknowingly. In today’s article, let’s talk about things you need to avoid on manual gearbox.

The clutch is only supposed to be engaged while braking or changing gears. If you keep it half-pressed while driving, it will lead to friction and the clutch will wear out sooner. It will increase the maintenance cost of the car. So it is better to just remove your leg from the clutch once you have shifted the gear.

Resting your hand on the gear lever is not a good thing. You are putting pressure on the selector fork and other internal parts. In the long run, this habit may cause unnecessary wear and tear on the gearbox components. So once you have changed the gear it is better to place the hand on the lap or even better on the steering wheel.

Another very common issue is grinding the gears. This happens when the clutch has not been engaged properly or even worse. Generally, when you do these you get a very harsh sound of metal rubbing. This will naturally lead to more wear and tear. It is better to fully press the clutch before shifting a gear.

This is more of a problem for new drivers. This happens when you are unfamiliar with the clutch settings. Not only you will feel a jerk inside the cabin. It also puts excessive pressure on the gearbox and engine causing a knockoff event. With regular driving and practice, this problem could be solved quite easily.

Using the wrong gears at the wrong speed can stress the engine. This will again cause stress on the engine and also the transmission. Continuously driving with mismatched gears is not good for the car in the long run. It is better to drive in the proper speed band for that particular gear.
